No Kings!!
No Kings!!

10/18/25

On this "No Kings" protest day, I wish to add my voice against the Trump Administration's demonstration of fascism.

Let's begin by recognizing Antifa. First, I offer an article from the BBC:

Antifa is short for anti-fascist. It is a loose, leaderless affiliation of mostly far-left activists.

The word Antifa comes from the German word "antifaschistisch", a reference to a German anti-fascist group from the 1930s.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order designating Antifa as a "domestic terrorist organisation". This action is problematic on several levels, but it reeks of Fascism.

In an article dated 10/13/25 by Joyce Vance entitled, “Are We the Nazis Now”, she boldly addresses the critical moment that we presently find ourselves in.

But, first, who is Joyce Vance?

Joyce Vance is a Brennan Center senior fellow who lends her expertise as a former federal prosecutor to writing and commenting on high-profile court cases and election-related matters. Previously, Vance served as the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2009 to 2017 during the Obama administration. She served on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys from 2009 to 2011 and co-chaired its criminal practice subcommittee from 2009 to 2017. Among her notable achievements were prosecuting the first material support of terrorism case in Alabama and successfully challenging the state’s 2011 anti-immigration law. Vance also created the first civil rights enforcement unit in an Alabama U.S. attorney’s office.

She is a distinguished professor of the practice of law at the University of Alabama School of Law, where she has taught since 2017, focusing on criminal law and democratic institutions. She is also a legal analyst for NBC and MSNBC and co-host of the legal podcasts #SistersInLaw and Cafe Insider.

Vance closes her article from Civil Discourse with these words:

[Under the Trump Administration] People are treated with a lack of respect for their basic human dignity. Many of them are hard-working folks who want to be able to love this country and give back because of the opportunity it gives them and their families. Instead, a president who is the son of immigrants and has been married twice to immigrants has become the face of nationalism, using hate and horror to expand his control over people, both American citizens and immigrants, on American soil. Are we the Nazis now?

What’s certain is this: No matter where Donald Trump wants to take this country, you and I are not going along for the ride. On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the No Kings rally on Saturday was a “hate-America” rally. He said the people attending would be “the pro-Hamas wing” and “the antifa people.” He’s wrong. We are, in the best tradition of America’s Greatest Generation, truly anti-fascist. And in 2025, anti-fascism begins at home, because we love this country and we believe in democracy. We’re ready.

No Kings!
