March to Fascism

I offer this quote from Secretary Madeleine Albright’s book, Fascism: A Warning,

“There are two kinds of fascists: those who give orders and those who take them. A popular base gives Fascism the legs it needs to march, the lungs it uses to proclaim, and the muscle it relies on to menace-but that’s Fascism from the neck down. To create tyranny out of the fears and hopes of average people, money is required, and so, too, ambition and twisted ideas. It is the combination that kills.”

Nicholas Kristof, opinion writer for the NYT, writes:

Vladimir Putin’s Russia has just become even more bleak and soulless with the reported death in an Arctic prison of Aleksei Navalny, the 47-year-old dissident who showed immense bravery and humor as he tried to bring democracy to his homeland.

Navalny’s strength, resilience and courage contrast with the fecklessness of so many Americans dealing with Putin. From Donald Trump to Tucker Carlson, a remarkable number of American leaders and their mouthpieces roll over before the Russian president.

It is profoundly troubling when American sycophants seem eager to whitewash Putin’s brutality, largely ignore his victims and score political points at home in ways that burnish Russian dictatorship and diminish American democracy.

Trump’s march toward Fascism must be stopped.  We should offer our opinions while we still have the freedom to do so; exercise our right to vote; and continue to advocate to reverse legislation that limits individual freedoms such as Roe vrs Wade; Citizens United; and the Electoral College.
