On November 23, 1989 my "sweet Caroliney" entered my life. Caroline Elizabeth Robinson Woliver has gently touched Rett's and my life since that wonderful day!

One endearing moment that is etched on my heart took place when she was around three years old. I often had to be out of town for work and so when I was home I enjoyed snuggling with her in her bed as she was going to sleep. We both would be lying on our sides with my belly up against her back. With my left arm over her, she would grasp my thumb with her little hand and would fall asleep. One night she surprised me by saying, "As long as you touch me, I don't need your thumb," and she released my thumb. I knew at that point that it was a first step for her to gain her independence while simultaneously requesting a need for continuous connection. Now, some thirty odd years later, I continue to offer her the gentle touch.
