Vernal Equinox 2023

The March equinox – also called the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere – marks the beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere.

Spring will arrive at Merry Mount on March 20, 2023 at 5:25 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

In an ideal, orderly world, the coldest temperature of the year would fall on the Winter Solstice, and as the calendar moved forward, the temperature would very gradually rise so that at the Spring Equinox we would experience the perfect temperature.

But no, this morning on the eve of Spring, the temperature at Merry Mount is 16 degrees with a wind chill of 4 degrees. Thankfully, we live in a wonderfully chaotic world.

I was delighted this morning, at dawn, as I stepped outside with the dogs, to see and hear a male cardinal singing from the top of one of the pear trees in the orchard. It assured me that “Spring was just around the corner”.

Just listen to and watch the birds, or observe blossoms as they open.

Ode to Spring

How wondrous thy music

This morning, now Spring.

Your Sun is well balanced

Your birds, how they sing!
